Interceptors
What are they? Where are they used?
An interceptor is a container made from plastic, fibre glass,
steel. It prevents oil collected from a site being discharged into
a storm drain, waterway, stream or fowl sewer.
When the area to be drained is assessed it is rated whether it
is high, medium or low risk, thus determining the type of interceptor
used.
In high and medium risk areas, e.g. petrol forecourts, full retention
interceptors are used. This allows an amount of oil to be stored
within the unit, depending on its size and area. These units can
range from 2,000 litres up to 30,000 litres and can have a rating
of Class 1 or Class 2.
Class 1 units allow 5 parts per million of oil to be discharged
at the outlet.
Class 2 units allow 100 parts per million of oil to be discharged.
These units can be fitted with automatic closure devices and coalescing
filters.
In low risk areas, e.g. car parks, housing estates and builders
yards, a by pass interceptor is used. This unit will collect the
initial wash of the yard which will contain all the contamination
and there after the rain water will be bypassed to a storm drain,
stream etc. These units are available for areas of 500m2 to 100,000m2.
On site pipe work along with volume of water on site will determine
size of pipework on the interceptor.
Full Retention - Bypass interceptors
Silt traps - Atlenuation tanks
